Huxley
Huxley's five original new elevators were built between 1915 -
1928. Huxley became a grain delivery point on the Grand Trunk Pacific
Railway in 1915 when the Alberta Farmers Cooperative Elevator Co built its
first elevator. The 1915 elevator became the United Grain Growers with
the amalgamation of the Alberta Farmers Cooperative and the Grain Growers
Grain Company. The original elevator was replaced in 1935 by a larger
facility. A large annex was added later.
The second new elevator was built by
Security Elevator Company in 1916. The Northern Elevator Company took
over in 1929. National Elevator Co bought them out in 1932.
National Elevator Co ran the elevator until it was taken over by UGG in
1970.
Western Canada Flour Mills Co Ltd built the third
new elevator in Huxley in 1917. Searle Grain Co took it over in
the late 30's. In 1946 this elevator closed.
The fourth new elevator was built by
Alberta Pool Elevators in 1927. In 1930 Alberta Pool Elevators changed
their name to the Alberta Wheat Pool. A large annex was added in the
early 50s. In 1988 United Grain Growers took it over.
The fifth new elevator was built in 1928
by Saskatchewan Elevator Co. Ltd. The Searle Grain Co took this
elevator over in 1929. In 1967 Federal Grain bought the elevator and
in 1970 UGG took it over. As of 1988 UGG had four elevators in
Huxley. The last elevator closed in 1997. There are no elevators
left in Huxley.
